Below is a list of accomplishments:

2020:

Completed the construction of a new Stabilization and Intensive Care building to replace the previous building which was severely undersized-especially during peak malaria seasons, when overcrowding could force 2-3 children to share a single bed.

2021:

Completed the construction of a building with 4 isolation rooms and rooms with 6 beds for our psychiatric patients, replacing the previous buildings which lacked windows, sufficient space, and a proper ceiling to shield patients form the tropical sun.

Installed high-quality solar power throughout the hospital funded by a grant from the Italian Bishop’s Conference

Constructed a protective fence around the 25 solar panels

Built a shed for the protection of the Operating Room sterilization process, using a pressure cooker

Purchased 45 mattresses and quality plastic to cover them with.

Completed multiple repairs to the hospital’s pharmacy storehouse building, which is also used by the health district for medications, vaccines storage.

Replaced the tires for the vehicle that transports materials and medications from the river to the hospital

Contributing to our Social Services Department by the construction of a building to raise pigs and chickens, which will help with the meals prepared daily

The addition of a new Siemens P500 ultrasound machine.

2022:

The construction of a new Emergency Room and Administrative Office building which replaced the old, overcrowded and deteriorating building.

The participation in a campaign sponsored by JADD Africa to operate on 100 women for free, for complications related to childbirth – bladder fistulas, uterine prolapse, cystoceles.

The addition of a Butterfly portable ultrasound device

Enlargement of the pediatric pavilion, to provide needed space for patients and families to sit outside, protected from the sun during the daytime.

Transformed the old Emergency Room building waiting room into the hospital’s main conference room.

Sponsored life-changing surgery in Kinshasa for a 13-year-old girl from a remote village, born with macroglossia (a tongue too long for her mouth)

2023

Installed a tile floor in our Stabilization and Intensive Care building

Repaired the road from the river, up a big hill to the hospital, which is used to transport medications and supplies.

Built an addition to our surgical department, increasing space between beds and allowing better separation of patients with clean vs. contaminated wounds

2024

Completed the construction of the new Internal Medicine building funded by donations and a grant from the Italian Bishop”s Conference

Built a house closer to the hospital for one of our doctors (for reasons of service and security while on call at night).

Built a residence for three of our medical residents.

Covered nursing school tuition for a young man who lost both parents.

Launched an employee autofinancing project to supplement low salaries; a motor and pirogue (long narrow boat) were purchased to enable travel and trade to Mbandaka, the nearest city, 118 miles up the river.

Reinforced the hospital perimeter wall to prevent erosion damage during the rainy season.

Constructed two classrooms and and office for our preschool.

Contributed to opening a new Health Center by our Province of the Daughters of Charity in Mbandaka

2025

We are currently constructing a new, larger isolation building

Contributing to the expansion of the chapel at our Provincial House in Mbandaka, accomodating the growing number of Sisters.

Ongoing:

Continuing to assist families unable to afford medical care, as well as others in extreme need.

Aspirations:

We are collaborating with and engineer to design a new OB/GYN building, which would be our first two-story building; plans include placing Pediatrics and Neonatology on the upper floor.

Planning computerize the hospital’s Pharmacy and Accounts Department

Aiming to paint the hospital to improve the environment for patients and staff.

Donations are tax exempt. 97.1% of your donation will go directly for hospital expansion and 2.1% for the service charge for Stripe. If you send a check, we do not pay the service charge for Stripe. To do so, make it out to “Daughters of Charity Ministries” and please specify on the check that it is for our hospital in Lukolela, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and mail it to our Provincial Treasurer in the US, Sr Nancy Murphy, Provincial Office, 4330 Olive St, Saint Louis, MO 63108-2622. She will transfer the funds to the Congo. Please specify if you need a tax exempt letter.
